Journal Post #4

In English 100 on Monday we watched a video titled Digital Nation which is 90 minutes long and goes in depth about how technology has become our life. People around the world use technology all day, every day! The producer and director of the documentary was RACHEL DRETZIN. The documentary explains to the viewer that technology is used so frequently that it has caused addiction, which can be life threatening. DOUGLAS RUSHKOFF states As it turns out, a few people have actually died in PC bangs after gaming marathons where they played 50 hours or more with little food or water. Some people who also keep playing video games end up losing weight because they eat less and aren’t focusing on food. DOUGLAS RUSHKOFF also says that children are taught how to use the computer at a young age: But they're also taught something else, how to use computers responsibly. It's required for Korean students starting in the 2nd grade. When children learn to use the computer at such a young age they are learning how computers and internet works and will learn as technology changes. This will make children become dependent on new technology since they are raised learning all about it. The new technology that is being released has had different opinions; some people love it and others hate all that is going on with society today.

I think that the video titled “Digital Nation” gave strong evidence that new technology isn’t good. People become really addicted to video games and anything that is related to technology. I know people that are addicted to watching the telly or are addicted to facebook games. People who have addictive personalities are more prone to become more addicted to all this crazy stuff that surrounds them! In the video the narrator says that someone once died because they didn’t eat or drink for 50 hours. Yeah that’s a huge problem. People become so addictive that they can’t leave that environment. They can’t stop playing a game or watching the telly. This is ruining people’s lives. Without this technology people wouldn’t be addicted to this bull crap, we won’t hear about people who marry because of dating sites and we wouldn’t hear about people addicted to porn. If computers and iPods and cell phones weren’t around people would actually meet someone they wanted to marry, they would become close to their families and learn to explore the real world not a virtual world, the real world that we live on! We don’t need technology to live or fit in. Society has painted a picture of how cool it is to the have the new iPhone4 or that Macs are better than PC’s. Who cares? The amount of money you have in your life doesn’t make you fit in or stand out. I’d rather be happy and not care about all this crazy technology but it surrounds me and I hate that. I hate going outside and fearing that someone who is driving and texting will kill me. This wasn’t America 50 years ago!

  1. Rushkoff does state that children in Korea are now, due to their government, required to learn about computers at a young age. This is so they can be smart about using technology and not become addicted as many people of today are. I disagree that this will make children become dependent on new technology since they are raised learning all about it. If they learn at a young age, they will recognize when they are using it on a day-to-day basis because that is what they are being taught. Becoming familiar with it so young, also teaches them that to be smart about using the technologies, that they can't be on it all the time. So in reality, they won't be dependent on it but independent since they have learned about it basically their whole lives.
