The woman in the background
I decided to choose the Budweiser video that we watched in class. I did think that it was interesting that there seemed to be two stories, in one commercial. Robert Scholes talked about the man making "the big call" and finally making his way in the world. Just from reading the article, the story portrayed was that just of a man that worked hard for his career. Once you watch the actualy Bud commercial though, you see him calling his wife, and her cheering him on at the game. It just went to show that, especially during that time, it was more about a woman supporting her husband and his career, and hopes, and dreams. Now adays, the average woman is encouraged to get her career and education on track, and to focus on herself first. Also on the flip side of that, it wasn't just about a man making his way to the top for his own personal gains. It gave the ellusion of the struggle of a man trying his best to provide for his family. It still holds true today. Yes the woman has evolved more in the sense of independence, but the husband still feels the pressure and responsibility to make it all work. I think a big part of the commercial that connected with the audience and still does, is that at the end of it he is at the bar and someone buys him a drink. It is the typical man thing to do, at the end of a long day, enjoy a nice cold brewsky. Women, have gone from having sewing get togethers, tupperware parties, to now getting their hair done and working out at the gym together. But the whole time it has been the man having a cold beer at the end of the day that signifies a hard worker. And hardworking is what has made America.
