I believe that Nicholas Carr's project within the essay it to leads to evaluate the long terms effect of societies Internet addiction. In general as a society we have became highly dependent on Internet usage, and whether we acknowledge it or not the usage has changed our internal thinking. According to Carr we are no longer able to take in large quantities of information, but instead we take in small fragments of information at a constant pace. In the article "Is Google Making Us Stupid?" Carr is trying to lead us into a contemplation about how the changes of reading and writing are truly effecting us as a whole. Since he speaks with a pessimistic tone he suggest that we are taking a turn that isn't necessarily for the best. I believe the main reason he wrote the article was to push all of the readers to really think about the way we think. A quote for the article directly from Carr that suggest that or thinking is changing in a similar way to cars he describes the change as "I'm not thinking the way I used to think. I can feel it most strongly when I'm reading. Immersing myself in a book or lengthy article used to be easy. My mind would get caught up in the narrative or the turns of the argument, and I spend long hours strolling through long stretches of prose. That rarely the case anymore. Now concentration often starts to drift at two or three pages.I get fidgety , lose the thread, begin looking for something else to do." This was a long passage explaining the way automatic information has reformed our brain.
The article is about how the Internet is changing our minds through the way we gather information. The project with the article in its entirety was an Internet debate about the change through the Internet for society as a whole. The author of the article backs up this statement through various facts. First he says that slowly our minds are developing from a normal thought patterns into a brain that works more similar to that of a hard drive. Then he touches on the fact that many developers of key elements of the Internet(specifically the founders of google) had the mere goal of making a super artificial intelligence within the Internet.Lastly in a profound way he suggested that we should all gather our own information about if we as an individual are better with relying on the Internet.
Individually I believe that our minds truly are changing because of the Internet. Our thought process at one point was that it was highly beneficial to read long passages within a novel or essay. Now our ideas of knowledge has transformed into it being that it is more beneficial to obtain little knowledge on many subjects. Carr suggests that our of our minds are changing at a highly rapid rate. But I think that the change is positive to us individually and to society as one. Know we can have access to whatever we currently long to conceptualize. Knowledge is not kept within the small rates of professors but we can all have the opportunity be knowledgeable as we choose to teach ourselves. I agree with Carr that the way we think is transforming into something different. But, I understand this as a great opportunity to grow as a society instead of the beginning of the downfall. We all now have a chance for unity and equality through tools obtained from the Internet. As opposed to what Carr thinks I feel as though that the reformation through the Internet is only a highly positive matter
